POLICY ON PROOFREADING
Proofreading is the process of correcting surface errors in writing, such as grammatical, punctuation, and spelling mistakes. The Writing Centers do not offer proofreading services. That is, we will not simply correct grammar, punctuation, or spelling mistakes for our students because doing so positions our student authors as passive observers instead of active collaborators in the writing process. Our guiding philosophy is to cultivate effective, confident writers, not just produce technically polished papers.
However, our mentors are happy to work with you to help you become a better editor of your own work. Our mentors are trained to give reader-based feedback on focus (thesis, controlling idea), support, and coherence first and foremost. When we are ready to move to style and correctness, we can select a section of your assignment and help you identify reoccurring sentence-level issues or patterns of error. We will then teach you how to address those errors, but you will be responsible for applying that knowledge to edit the rest of your paper. Editing (like proofreading) can take a long time, which is why we encourage students to plan ahead and visit the SWC early and often.
If you are simply looking for a quick grammar check, we recommend you ask someone you trust to proofread your work or invest in a professional proofreading service. Online services will, for a fee, proofread and/or edit your work (University of the Pacific does not cover these fees.) Note: This list is not an endorsement of any of these businesses--caveat emptor!
